  • Summary

Returning states, Jake who has worked as a scuba diver for 10 years, hears about a new invention about scuba muffler. Scuba muffler acts as a filter in a diving device. It transforms large bubbles to small one. Because most scuba diver try to hold their breat while filming , they kept looking a invetion to avoid some danger they have underneath sea. The greatest obstacle is noisy sounds of regulator. While breating, the scuba device maks floating air and the regulator have the air flow resist. However, the regulator is too heavy to hold and it makes them become exhausted too quickly. The scuba muffler is desined to overcome this problem by placing it behind scuba diver's head. It is desined to use differnt pleasure that allows air pull out easily. So, many scuba divers have welcome this new invetion.

Week 6 : Task 1- Long Term Memory

  1. Funny Austrailian guy explaining long term memory

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RywvysxnSc

This video, which is made by James Rose, explains what the long term memory is. Long term memory is just like a giant store room where everything in our brain are strored. For example, it is like a files in a computer and books in the library. There are two type of long term memory. First , it is called Procedural memory which is memory of doing somethin such as baking a cake and playing a instruments. The other type is declarative memory which is also called by episodic memory such as a whole communion or brother wedding. In declarative memory, there are symmentry memory which is like being aware of noise around us.

2. 4 ways to help long term retrieval

http://seattlecentral.angellearning.com/section/default.asp?id=A9016865&goto=

This video explains 4 ways to help longterm retrieval showing a role play. The first way is " Repeat, Recite Review" A strudent who acts a teacher ask students to repeat, recite and review a word "mississippi. As repeating , it is getting to long term memory The scond way is "Distrbutive Practice". we can divide the word "Mississippi" to some fragments like miss , iss and ippi. The several pieces help to memorize the word easily. The third way is "Serial - position Effect". We can find the series in the word such as iss. Finding series also a good way to memorize into long term memory. The last way is "Similarities & Differences". We can analysis the word in similarities and differences with other words. For example the first part mississippi is similar with the word "Miss". Finding similarities or differences is also to help long term retrueval.

  • Person opinion

Although the first video is funny, I prefer the second video which shows 4 ways to help long term retrival. The first one is also fresh that helps to understand what the long term memory is. Yet, the second one is more clear to understand what the director want to tell .

The way I usually do to remember important is using notes. I oragnize what I have to do in a day , then I write some memo as a schedule list so that I do not forget what I have to do. To help long term retrieval, I like using the last method that is to find similarities and differences. When I was in high school, I used to use the way to prepare tests. It migh be the best way for me to memorize something important.

Week 5: Task 1 -Debt trap: College borrowing catches up

http://video.nytimes.com/video/playlist/business/1194811622255/index.html

  • Summary

What I chose is about students who are in problem of dept after borrowing student loans. Most College students have relied on students loans to pay for thier education. However , after graduation, the loans rise up too rapidly to pay back. This video is introuducing Stefan Heise who graduated College spending student loans and his dept has been rising up to 29 %. After all, he ends up applying bankruptcy because he is not only affordable to paying back 84,000 debt but also has not enough money to live.

Reserchers say that this generation has been in diffrent circumstances with former generation. Even though they have obtained same bachelor's degree with the former generaion, the money now they have earned is relatively lower than before . The worse true is that the living expenses require higher cost than before. They need to achive higer degree than former generation needed for better lives.

After few months Heise applied bankruptcy, bankruptcy dismissed his dept, but there still left 16,000 he have to pay back. However, at least he can start a new plan without numberless dept.

  • Personal Response

As a student, I feel sympathized with students who are suffering from dept after graduation. It is heatbreaking that some studnets ended up going bankruptcy because they invested their money for their education. I often hear about this problem that students usually start thier work with dept. It is one of frustration that they have to pay back every month from their salary for their dept. The problem is that they are in dept even though they are no afford to pay it back. Who can blame on them for their dept ? I think there need to issue more reaonable policy for students who are struggling with thire dept.

http://video.pbs.org/video/1114402491/subject/957383245/topic/957388340

  • Summary

This video is a dacumentary about doctors. It starts introducing 7 women and men who alredy graduated Havard University Medical School decades ago. They go back to the school to attend reunion. It is a doumentary about dotors and they show the first class of them in the shool. They enlloed medical school at 1987 and they all freshmen . Some of students introduced why they chose medical shool and the goal they had and they said they wanted to help people in margin.

The first day they had anatomy class was hard for every students. Some students felt uncomfortabl and very nervous. They had to hold their breath to calm down them seves. As hard as the anatomy class, the first year at shool was very difficult for every students. The students practiced doctoring skills and they had to deal with the stress of medical school year. They were not afford to spending even for laundary. The other a big stress was their pride. Because they all always did very well at each of their shools, it was stressful when they felt they know nothing.

At the tird year in the medical shool, they started to see patients. Some students stuggled with thire emothion when they faced patient's death. They showed contemplating of princible about being doctor.

After for year, they celebrated thire new status as doctors and they began new lives as real doctors.
  • Personal response.

The reason I chose this video is that I need a motivation to study . Whenever I talk to my mon on the phone, I complained how much study I had to. She discipled me that I was responsible for being a valuable person as a member. I felt shame on my self for just chasing after daily homework, so the title attracted me to watch. This video definitely shows how much the medical students struggle with their study at medical school even though they all are conisiderd as brilliances. They don't have enough time to even laundry. They devote every time to be doctors. They are tring to find a motivation while they encounter patients and they feel like compenstion after helping sick people. I want find the purpose and worth why I have to study as like them. It would help me to adhere studying more and more.

Week4: Task1- Is There Life on Mars?

  • Summary

Mars are a illusion to us. It is surrounded by many secrets. Many scientists have hard been studying about Mars for decades because Mars is enough live tings to live. So, some scientists think we might be not alone in the Universe. That's why Mars are the best interseting subject we have endless tried to explore. Mars are so far away from Earth that only robots can land on now. The pioneer of this study is Peter Smith. He have tried the misson of Mars 7 times. Befor Agust 4 2007, he had never got siganal from his robot which sended to Mars. However, he never give up although Nasa canceld the misson that was suppose to launch as a associated project with his study team. On August 4 2007, his project team sent a robot which called Apropo Phoenix. The robot finally successed to arrive on Mars 9 month later. It has been a great chance to discover about Mars. The first country which sended a robot to Mars was Soviet. After 8 missions failure, Soviet successed to get image of Mars but there was no sign of lives. There are 3 significant conditions for lives to be genrated their lives. First is energy sources such as heat, sun rise, volcano. The second thing is organics to build blocks of lives. Last is solar system. So, Nasa sent two robots which called Spirit and Opportunity to search for sign of the conditions trace like ancient water stream. The robots laid down on a trace of water on Mars. The robots successed to pick some soil. The result was disappoint for sientist. Because the ancient water on Mars was too salty live things to live. The only positive thing is there might be high heat at least. Because the soil is made of silica almost 90 %, there should have been high heat billions years ago. The possibility of exists of water and heat support the idea that it would generate orgainism at the time. However, it is true that there are still many skeptical in the notion.
  • Personal Response

The reaon I chose this video is that I alway wonder what if there are the other live on the universe and it is true that few people' insitence about it. The curisity stimulated me to choose this video. To be honest, I was not interseted in space sience and still now. However, I wondered how much the space science technique have progressed. The sientist struggled to have robots land on Mars. They failed many times but thanks to thire patience to reach Mars, they finally successed to survey Mars. Thire preserverance was so impressed that I cannot help admiring them. They are still making efforts to find more information about Mars and It is certain that next generation would discover on better condition we have had from former generation. No matter how much they success the dicovery about Mars, I praise the endless efforts of many scientists and thire inteligence.

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to my blog and I am so glad at introducing myself to everyone. I am Sue and I am from South Korea. As you can expect, I can speak fluent Korean and someday I wish I would speak English fluently too. I 've stayed to the USA for a year to study English and I have a plan for studying biology at SCCC. I went to university in Korea and after I just finished a year as a junior university, I decided to come to the USA. Because I wanted to not only improve my English, but also experience wide knowledge and a peaceful living life, I set up a goal to study in the USA. Before I came to the USA, I was still looking for a dream. I didn't find What the career was right for me and what the aptitude I had. I was so ordinary that I just followed most people preferred. It might be true that being ordinary was also valuable but I couldn't imagine me as a heroin in my life. While living in the USA, my life has been changed to something special. I have seen abundant people, chances and dreams. Most people whom I met in the USA had each worty dream. No matter where they from, their age and gender, they showed a very brave challenge in any situation. I was so impressed that I started dream to be a essential member of this society. That is the reason I decided to stay in the USA though I have to be far away from my home country and family.

The other thing I would like to say is my hobby. There are a few hobbies I like. Among them, the most special thing I love is music. I like singing, playing some instruments and listening music. I had sung as a choir in the Sunday school. So, my childhood was composed by memories singing It was one of my pleasures that I enjoyed so much. Since then, it has been a my special hobby that my friends dintinguish me.
My favorite web site is Hulu . I like watching movie and shows. This is fine website which I can see many show for free. I think that it is very important to watch media in Englinsh because I can learn useful oral English. we all students who want to improve English, so I understand how international studendts are struggled with English as well. It must be hard to conqure but I am looking forward to the day that we all are smilling at English with satisfaction .
