Week 5: Task 1 -Debt trap: College borrowing catches up

http://video.nytimes.com/video/playlist/business/1194811622255/index.html

  • Summary

What I chose is about students who are in problem of dept after borrowing student loans. Most College students have relied on students loans to pay for thier education. However , after graduation, the loans rise up too rapidly to pay back. This video is introuducing Stefan Heise who graduated College spending student loans and his dept has been rising up to 29 %. After all, he ends up applying bankruptcy because he is not only affordable to paying back 84,000 debt but also has not enough money to live.

Reserchers say that this generation has been in diffrent circumstances with former generation. Even though they have obtained same bachelor's degree with the former generaion, the money now they have earned is relatively lower than before . The worse true is that the living expenses require higher cost than before. They need to achive higer degree than former generation needed for better lives.

After few months Heise applied bankruptcy, bankruptcy dismissed his dept, but there still left 16,000 he have to pay back. However, at least he can start a new plan without numberless dept.

  • Personal Response

As a student, I feel sympathized with students who are suffering from dept after graduation. It is heatbreaking that some studnets ended up going bankruptcy because they invested their money for their education. I often hear about this problem that students usually start thier work with dept. It is one of frustration that they have to pay back every month from their salary for their dept. The problem is that they are in dept even though they are no afford to pay it back. Who can blame on them for their dept ? I think there need to issue more reaonable policy for students who are struggling with thire dept.

  1. Yes, it is such a sad story. Nowdays, I can feel how much money I have to spend for the higher education. It is awful amount itself but in other hand, for good education, the school need much money and current payments from the students are actually not enough. I could not able to find any solution about that kind of problem. So sad.

  2. It is a hard tome to afford the tuition for some students. We have to pay a lot in order to get higher education. It is also a problem in my country. Sometimes I felt very worried about this issue.
