http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RywvysxnSc

This video, which is made by James Rose, explains what the long term memory is. Long term memory is just like a giant store room where everything in our brain are strored. For example, it is like a files in a computer and books in the library. There are two type of long term memory. First , it is called Procedural memory which is memory of doing somethin such as baking a cake and playing a instruments. The other type is declarative memory which is also called by episodic memory such as a whole communion or brother wedding. In declarative memory, there are symmentry memory which is like being aware of noise around us.

2. 4 ways to help long term retrieval

This video explains 4 ways to help longterm retrieval showing a role play. The first way is " Repeat, Recite Review" A strudent who acts a teacher ask students to repeat, recite and review a word "mississippi. As repeating , it is getting to long term memory The scond way is "Distrbutive Practice". we can divide the word "Mississippi" to some fragments like miss , iss and ippi. The several pieces help to memorize the word easily. The third way is "Serial - position Effect". We can find the series in the word such as iss. Finding series also a good way to memorize into long term memory. The last way is "Similarities & Differences". We can analysis the word in similarities and differences with other words. For example the first part mississippi is similar with the word "Miss". Finding similarities or differences is also to help long term retrueval.

  • Person opinion

Although the first video is funny, I prefer the second video which shows 4 ways to help long term retrival. The first one is also fresh that helps to understand what the long term memory is. Yet, the second one is more clear to understand what the director want to tell .

The way I usually do to remember important is using notes. I oragnize what I have to do in a day , then I write some memo as a schedule list so that I do not forget what I have to do. To help long term retrieval, I like using the last method that is to find similarities and differences. When I was in high school, I used to use the way to prepare tests. It migh be the best way for me to memorize something important.

Week 5: Task 1 -Debt trap: College borrowing catches up

http://video.nytimes.com/video/playlist/business/1194811622255/index.html

  • Summary

What I chose is about students who are in problem of dept after borrowing student loans. Most College students have relied on students loans to pay for thier education. However , after graduation, the loans rise up too rapidly to pay back. This video is introuducing Stefan Heise who graduated College spending student loans and his dept has been rising up to 29 %. After all, he ends up applying bankruptcy because he is not only affordable to paying back 84,000 debt but also has not enough money to live.

Reserchers say that this generation has been in diffrent circumstances with former generation. Even though they have obtained same bachelor's degree with the former generaion, the money now they have earned is relatively lower than before . The worse true is that the living expenses require higher cost than before. They need to achive higer degree than former generation needed for better lives.

After few months Heise applied bankruptcy, bankruptcy dismissed his dept, but there still left 16,000 he have to pay back. However, at least he can start a new plan without numberless dept.

  • Personal Response

As a student, I feel sympathized with students who are suffering from dept after graduation. It is heatbreaking that some studnets ended up going bankruptcy because they invested their money for their education. I often hear about this problem that students usually start thier work with dept. It is one of frustration that they have to pay back every month from their salary for their dept. The problem is that they are in dept even though they are no afford to pay it back. Who can blame on them for their dept ? I think there need to issue more reaonable policy for students who are struggling with thire dept.
